• Reflect some of the ways that you want to assess your students, i.e. monitor their level of understanding what you're teaching.

I want to monitor my students regularly though homework assignments and small in classes checks. They may be review questions, or vocabulary quizzes, or even just an exit question (they have to do something and pass it in before they can leave such as define a term, or name a conductor in the room) which can be a simple check for basic facts or application of knowledge from class. These can be graded on a simple check scale ( check plus, check, check minus). I plan on peer editing for their lab reports and self checks before writing up the final copies (which they hand in both for so that I can see the changes they made). The larger assignments of quizzes, tests and labs that are done in class will be graded on a 100 point scale. (as I am leaving part way through the quarter for them I am sticking mostly to my CT's grading scheme so as not to change from what the students already know, or how they will be graded part way through).

  • Describe your grading policy, i.e. how you will assign scores to represent performance. Explain why you are choosing to use this method. If you are continuing your CT's grading policy, explain what you feel are the strengths and weaknesses of this approach.

I plan on staying with my CT's grading style so as not to confuse the students part way through their quarter (especially as I will be leaving part way through a unit, and the quarter). This follows through with check, check plus, and check minus on homework, and class checks to find out if they are understanding the concepts. As well as 100 point scores for tests, and 10 points for quizzes. I also have rubrics for any writing assignments and for their lab reports. I feel that overall this works with this age student fairly well. My only worry is that they have so few summative assessments that missing one would cause their grades to drop drastically. However the team policy is that students can make up work for a teacher on the day they stay after each week, which includes tests and labs and such. As this has been working for my CT this year as I have observed I feel that it should for me as well. The constant formative assessment will certainly help me know if I am getting the right ideas across to the students.

(As of Feb. 2, 2009)
My Grading scheme has changed to a points system (4/6 rather than making every assignment out of 100 points). This is due to going over the garding and my options with my CT and the teams choice to start using the on-line grading system of the school so that parents can see how their students are doing. This system allows me to grade by a points system (in a way my CT's old spread sheets do not) and makes it available to the team to look at, as well as the parents.
